Puri: In a move to safeguard the spiritual and structural integrity of the revered Shree Jagannath Temple, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), in close collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is meticulously planning and executing the crucial repair and conservation of the temple’s sacred treasury, the Ratna Bhandar. This divine undertaking aims to ensure the enduring sanctity and safety of this vital part of the holy shrine.
SJTA Chief Administrator, Dr.Arabinda Kumar Padhee has indicated here on 11 June. The vital repair work, temporarily paused for the auspicious Chandan Yatra and other rituals, is set to resume with renewed vigor from June 28 to July 6, 2025.
This strategically chosen period, coinciding with the annual Rath Jatra when Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra are away at the Shree Gundicha Temple, will allow for unhindered progress on the vital restoration efforts. The SJTA and ASI are working with divine dedication to complete this monumental task before the deities’ glorious return during Niladri Bije on July 8, 2025.
The comprehensive scope of work encompasses both the inner and outer chambers of the Ratna Bhandar. The Bhitara Bhandar (Inner Treasury) has seen significant internal conservation, with five damaged beams reverently replaced by new stainless steel box beams. Floor renovation remains a priority. In the Bahara Bhandar (Outer Treasury), the renovation and replacement of damaged stone elements are nearing completion, with four to five beams also slated for replacement with durable stainless steel box beams.
Beyond structural reinforcement, the ASI will perform a sacred chemical washing and scientific conservation of the outer surfaces of the Ratna Bhandar, ensuring its pristine preservation. A significant upgrade includes the replacement of the existing metal mesh gate and wooden door of the Bahara Bhandar with a robust stainless steel gate and a door crafted from hallowed Burma teak wood. Plans are also underway to silver clad the new Bahara Bhandar door and gold clad the Bhitara Bhandar door, adding to their divine splendor.
This period of intense devotion and restoration extends beyond the Ratna Bhandar. The sacred Garbha Gruha (sanctum sanctorum) will also undergo essential repair and renovation. Furthermore, the comfort of countless devotees will be enhanced with the installation of air-conditioners in the Natya Mandap, a new ramp at the north gate for improved accessibility, and the structural reinforcement of the Jagamohana and subsidiary temples. Chemical cleaning of the outer stone surfaces will further restore the temple’s ancient glory.
The SJTA and ASI are working in harmonious synergy, with regular review meetings of the technical advisory committee ensuring that the structural integrity and spiritual sanctity of the temple are preserved. This endeavor beautifully integrates advanced conservation technology with time-honored traditional techniques, reflecting a deep respect for the temple’s heritage.
This crucial repair work is a testament to the unwavering commitment to the Shree Jagannath Temple. Previous assessments had highlighted the dilapidated condition of the Ratna Bhandar, underscoring the urgent need for timely intervention to prevent potential collapse. Through these dedicated efforts, the Ratna Bhandar, a repository of divine treasures, will be meticulously restored, safeguarding its sacred legacy for generations of devotees to come.
