Balangir: Shri Manmath Vijaya Singh Deo, the royal scion of the Balangir Patna State, recently visited the historic Sulia Jatra to offer prayers and connect with the local community.
Demonstrating his well known commitment to the people, Shri Singh Deo participated in the traditional rituals and worshiped Sulia Baba, seeking blessings for the overall prosperity and well-being of the region.
The annual Sulia Jatra, a centuries old tribal festival, was celebrated with traditional fervor at the sacred Sulia Peetha in Khairguda and Kumuria villages. This significant event of Western Odisha is observed on the first Tuesday of the bright fortnight in the Hindu month of Pousa.
The festival is dedicated to the presiding deity Sulia Baba, who is worshipped by the Kandha tribe. For generations, the community has believed that offering rituals at this site ensures a good harvest, health, and prosperity for the region.

The connection between the royal family of Balangir and the Sulia Jatra is deeply rooted in the history of the Patna State. As the traditional heads of the region, the royal scions have historically acted as patrons and participants in the cultural and religious life of the tribal communities. Their involvement serves as a symbolic bridge between the state’s ancient royal heritage and the indigenous customs of the land.

During Shri Singh Deo’s visit, the kind hearted leader took the opportunity to interact directly with the devotees and local residents. He expressed a deep concern for social issues, praying to the deity for the eradication of ignorance, poverty, and ill health among the masses. His approachable nature was on full display as he engaged in openhearted conversations with the public, particularly the youth, who expressed great enthusiasm in meeting him.

Shri Singh Deo carries forward a significant political and social legacy as the grandson of the former Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Rajendra Narayan Singh Deo, and the son of former Minister Shri Anang Uday Singh Deo and brother of Balangir MLA Shri Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo.
Known for his fearless personality and dedication to his roots, Shri Singh Deo’s presence at the Sulia Jatra reinforced his bond with the cultural heritage of Balangir and his ongoing mission to serve the people. His presence at the Bada Khala and Sana Khala highlighted the continuing relevance of the royal scion in local traditions.

Shri Singh Deo interacted with the devotees and youngsters, praying for the eradication of social evils such as poverty and ignorance. His participation emphasizes how the royal legacy in Balangir remains intertwined with the grassroots spiritual identity of the people.
