Berhampur: The Silk City of Berhampur is currently awash in vibrant hues and echoing with devotional fervor as the biennial Budhi Thakurani Yatra approaches its grand finale on 28 April. For the past 25 days, starting from 3 April, the city has been immersed in joyous celebrations marking the traditional visit of Maa Budhi Thakurani, the revered presiding deity, to her paternal abode on Desibehera Street.
The festival has transformed Berhampur into a spectacle of dazzling lights and intricately decorated pandals, drawing throngs of devotees and visitors alike. The magnificent chariots of various deities, including Sri Ram, Laxman, Parsuram, Jwalamukhi, and Mahalaxmi, have become major points of attraction, captivating onlookers with their artistry and grandeur.
Adding a unique cultural dimension to the festivities are the captivating storytelling arts exhibited across different locations in the city. These visual narratives offer glimpses into religious epics and local traditions, further enriching the festive experience. Notably, unique chariot designs like the ‘Boita’ (boat), ‘Doli’ (swing), and ‘Binchhana’ (fans) have been strategically placed, adding to the visual tapestry of the celebration. A total of 28 such chariots have been erected throughout Berhampur.
The ‘Boita Rath’, stationed at Bachuwari street, holds special significance as it beautifully represents the glorious maritime history of ancient Odisha and underscores Berhampur’s historical importance as a major trade center in the region. This chariot serves as a poignant reminder of the state’s rich past.
Furthermore, the artistic skills of local artisans are on full display through the ‘kalakunjas’ (arts) and chariots scattered across various localities, ensuring that the festive spirit permeates every corner of the city. One such compelling exhibit is the depiction of the Sri Rama Leela at the coconut market. The epic tale of Lord Rama is vividly portrayed through a series of 113 meticulously crafted frames, offering a visual treat for devotees and art enthusiasts.
As the 25-day-long celebration draws to a close tomorrow, the city eagerly anticipates the ceremonial return of Maa Budhi Thakurani to her temple. The grand procession marking this return is expected to be a spectacular affair, bringing to an end another vibrant and culturally rich iteration of the Budhi Thakurani Yatra, leaving behind cherished memories for the people of the Silk City.
