Shortage Of Women Police

New Delhi: In the last eight years, there has been no addition of new women police station in Odisha, where as 227 new women police stations have been added across the country. In 2014, there were six women police stations in the state, which remained unchanged till 2022.

This was revealed by the reply given by Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai in the Lok Sabha. According to the Union Minister’s reply, there were 518 women police stations across the country in 2014, which increased to 745 by 1st of 2022.

Tamil Nadu has the highest number of 202 women police stations, followed by Uttar Pradesh with the second highest number of 77 women police stations. However, the number of women police stations in Madhya Pradesh has increased from 9 to 52 in these eight years.

Similarly, the number of women police stations in West Bengal has increased from 10 to 48 during this period, while in Jharkhand it has increased from 22 to 33. The number of women police stations in Haryana has increased from two to 33 during this period. Meanwhile, the number of women police stations in Andhra Pradesh has come down from 32 to 18.

In his reply, the Union Minister mentioned that the Central Government has been repeatedly asking the states since 2014 to increase the number of women in the police. The central government has asked to increase it by at least 33 per cent and appoint at least three sub-inspectors and 10 constables in each women police station. So that the complaint cell can function round the clock in the women’s police stations, the Minister said in his reply.

According to the reply given in the Lok Sabha, the number of women police personnel across the country has increased from 5.87 per cent in 2013 to 11.75 per cent by 2022. In 2022, there were 2,46,103 police personnel across the country. However, according to this information, the number of women employees in the country is increasing every year.

As of 2022, there were a total of 5,909 women police personnel in Odisha, of which one was in the rank of Additional Director General of Police, two in the rank of IGP, four in the rank of Additional IG/SP, three in the rank of Additional SP, 75 in the rank of ASP, 275 in the rank of Inspector, 485 in the rank of Sub-Inspector. Uttar Pradesh has more than 33,000 women police personnel, while Maharashtra has more than 30,000 lady police.
