SG Prez On Odisha Visit

Bhubaneswar: Singapore President Tharman Shanmurgaratnam is scheduled to arrive here tomorrow morning on a two-day visit to the State.

The visit assumes significance as the President is making his maiden visit to the State ahead of Utkarsh Odisha: Make-in-Odisha conclave, the mega investors’ summit of the BJP government in the state slated to be held on January 28 and 29.

He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Ministers, Members of Parliament and officials.

As per the schedule, the Singaporean President will arrive here at the airport at around 11.45 am. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and State government officers will meet him in a hotel tomorrow afternoon.

He would join a MoU signing ceremony at World Skill Centre on extending cooperation in the field of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to further enhance skill development ecosystem in Odisha and enhancing the TVET landscape for the semiconductor industry in Odisha through introduction of semiconductor related skilling in Odisha.  The President will visit the World Skill Centre, which was set up by Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education and Education Services (ITEES) with funding from the Asian Development Bank.  

The Chief Minister will host an official dinner for him tomorrow. They will also discuss economic strategies and mutual opportunities.

On January 18, Tharman will visit Sun Temple Konark in the morning and then visit the vaccine manufacturing plant of Bharat Biotech in the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. He will interact with media persons at the venue before leaving the State.

A business delegation will also join the President in Odisha to explore collaboration in skills development and other areas of economic development.

Several bilateral agreements, focusing primarily on the petrochemical and green energy sectors, are likely to be formalised during Tharman’s stay in Odisha. This visit is also expected to further strengthen the economic and cultural ties between Singapore and Odisha, opening new avenues for mutual growth and cooperation, the sources added.
