Bhubaneswar: Odisha has solemnly marked the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency in India, a day remembered as a “dark chapter” in the nation’s democratic history.
The Department of Odia Language, Literature and Culture organized a significant event to commemorate the occasion, emphasizing the importance of educating the current generation about the period when constitutional frameworks, fundamental rights, freedom of expression, and liberty were severely curtailed.
The Emergency, imposed on June 25, 1975, saw the suppression of dissent under Section 352, leading to the arbitrary jailing of individuals and widespread restrictions on the press. Today’s commemoration served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who stood up against these unconstitutional measures to protect democratic principles.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his satisfaction with the successful organization of the event honoring democratic fighters. “It is our duty and responsibility to make the truth of this dark chapter known to today’s generation,” the Chief Minister reiterated, underscoring the enduring relevance of remembering this period.
The event, which was described as a “grand success,” was the result of extensive initiatives chalked out by Principal Secretary Sanjeeb Kumar Mishra and skillfully implemented by the Director of Odia Language, Literature and Culture, Bijaya Ketan Upadhyay.

Shri Upadhyay, an honest and hardworking civil servant, was lauded for his dedicated efforts in bringing the program to fruition.
Additional Chief Secretary Home, Satyabrata Sahu, who closely monitored the entire program, also conveyed his satisfaction with the “befitting” observance of “Sambidhan Hatya Diwas” (Day of Constitutional Assassination).

The collective efforts ensured that the gravity and lessons of the Emergency period were effectively conveyed to all attendees, reinforcing the state’s commitment to safeguarding democratic values.
The well organized meeting and exhibition scripted success, thanks to innovative initiatives taken by Director Culture, Shri Upadhyay, said an organizer.
