Sagarmala Boosts Odisha Economy

Bhubaneswar: The Sagarmala Programme provides a significant boost to Odisha’s economy by leveraging its long coastline to transform the state into a premier maritime gateway for Eastern India. By focusing on port-led development, the initiative reduces logistics costs for Odisha’s mineral-rich industries, facilitates smoother bulk cargo movement, and creates thousands of local employment opportunities. These benefits are realized through the modernization of existing infrastructure and the integration of the state’s industrial hubs with global trade routes.

A primary focus in Odisha is the expansion and modernization of Paradip Port. Under Sagarmala, Paradip has seen significant capacity augmentation, making it one of the highest cargo-handling ports in the country. Specific projects include the development of a world-class terminal and the implementation of mechanized handling systems to reduce vessel turnaround time. This modernization supports the movement of coal from Odisha’s mines to southern and western power plants via coastal shipping, which is more cost-effective and environmentally friendly than rail transport.

Connectivity projects in Odisha are another major highlight. These involve the construction of heavy-haul rail lines and road upgrades linking the industrial hinterland of Kalinganagar and Angul to the ports of Paradip and Dhamra. By strengthening these links, the program reduces logistics costs for the state’s steel and aluminum industries.

The program also focuses on port-led industrialization through the development of Coastal Economic Zones. In Odisha, this involves creating industrial clusters near ports to encourage manufacturing and value addition of minerals before they are exported. Furthermore, the development of inland waterways, specifically National Waterway 5 involving the Brahmani and Mahanadi delta river systems, is a priority. This initiative aims to provide an alternative transport route for cargo from industrial hubs to the coast.

Coastal community development in Odisha under Sagarmala emphasizes the welfare of the fishing community. This includes the modernization of fishing harbors and the establishment of skill development centers. These centers are designed to train local youth in maritime logistics, ship repair, and other related trades, ensuring that the economic benefits of port development reach the local population. Through these integrated efforts, Sagarmala is transforming Odisha into a vital gateway for maritime trade in Eastern India.
