RTO Delivers ₹10 Lakh Shock

Cuttack: In a stern crackdown on traffic rule violators, the Cuttack Regional Transport Office (RTO) has levied a staggering fine of Rs 10.19 lakh on the owner of a private bus for operating without essential documents and failing to pay taxes. The unprecedented penalty underscores the RTO’s resolve to ensure road safety and strict adherence to motor vehicle regulations in the region.

The bus, identified as “Shivashankar” with registration number OD 05 AV 5465, was intercepted during a routine inspection. Investigations revealed a litany of serious offenses, including the absence of a valid fitness certificate, a pollution control certificate, a permit, and insurance. Furthermore, the bus owner had outstanding taxes amounting to a significant sum.

“This significant fine serves as a clear warning to all vehicle owners and operators,” stated a senior RTO official. “We will not tolerate any violations that compromise public safety and undermine the integrity of our transport system. All vehicles must comply with the stipulated norms, and those found flouting them will face severe penalties.”

The action comes amidst increased efforts by transport authorities in Odisha to streamline traffic management and reduce road accidents. The imposition of such a substantial fine is expected to act as a major deterrent for other transporters who might be operating illegally or neglecting mandatory compliance.

Under the amended Motor Vehicles Act, 2019, fines for various traffic offenses have been significantly increased to promote greater discipline on roads. This latest move by the Cuttack RTO highlights the stringent enforcement of these revised penalties, making it one of the highest fines imposed on a private bus owner in the state. The seized bus will remain impounded until the owner clears the entire penalty amount and rectifies all the violations.
