Rairangpur; New Police District

Bhubaneswar: In a significant decision aimed at bolstering law and order and improving police administration, the Odisha Cabinet today approved the creation of a new Police District headquartered at Rairangpur.

This move will involve the bifurcation of the existing Mayurbhanj Police District, marking a strategic restructuring for more efficient policing in the region.

Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja briefed Media after the State Cabinet Meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi here on 16 July.

The newly formed Rairangpur Police District will comprise two Sub-Divisional Police Offices (SDPOs), one in Rairangpur itself and the other in Karanjia. This will allow for more localized supervision and quicker response times.

A total of 14 police stations will fall under the jurisdiction of the new Rairangpur Police District. These include Rairangpur, Rairangpur Town, Badampahada, Gorumahisani, Bisoi, Tiring, Bahalda, Jamda, Karanjia, Thakurmunda, Mahuladiha, Raruan, Ghagarbeda, and Jashipur. Additionally, the district will incorporate five police outposts and two beat houses, further expanding police presence in remote areas.

The decision to carve out a new police district from Mayurbhanj has been a long-standing demand, primarily aimed at easing the administrative burden on the large Mayurbhanj district and ensuring more focused policing in its tribal-dominated and geographically diverse regions. This is expected to lead to improved public access to police services and a more effective law enforcement mechanism.

With the establishment of the Rairangpur Police District, Odisha now has a total of 32 police districts, underscoring the state government’s commitment to strengthening its administrative and security framework across the state.
