PM: North East India’s Growth Engine

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the “Rising North East Investors Summit 2025” at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, today, expressing strong confidence in the region’s future. He highlighted the North East’s diverse potential across trade, tradition, textiles, and tourism, emphasizing its role as a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) component.

The Prime Minister outlined the “EAST” vision for the region – Empower, Act, Strengthen, and Transform – and noted the transformative changes over the past 11 years, including over 700 visits by Union Ministers. He stressed the “Infrastructure Revolution” in the North East, citing significant investments in highways (11,000 km built), railways, airports (doubled), waterways, and digital connectivity (1,600 km gas grid, optical fiber expansion, 4G/5G).

Shri Modi underscored the North East’s strategic position as a trade bridge to ASEAN, with India’s trade volume with the bloc expected to exceed $200 billion. He mentioned key projects like the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway and the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Project, and the development of Multi-Modal Logistics Hubs in Guwahati, Imphal, and Agartala.

Highlighting new opportunities, the Prime Minister urged investors to explore the North East for “Heal in India” initiatives, eco-tourism, and cultural tourism, noting a doubling of visitor numbers. He affirmed the government’s zero-tolerance policy against terrorism and insurgency, leading to peace agreements and new opportunities for the youth.

Shri Modi emphasized significant investments in education and skill development, including ₹21,000 crore in the past decade, leading to new schools, AIIMS, medical colleges, IIITs, and India’s first sports university. He also stressed the growing global demand for organic food, with the North East doubling its organic farming scope and producing high-quality products.

The Prime Minister identified energy and semiconductors as key strategic sectors, with substantial investments in hydropower and solar power. He announced that the first “Made in India” chip from a North East-based semiconductor plant would soon be introduced, solidifying the region’s position in high-tech industrial growth.

Calling the summit a “movement and a call to action,” Prime Minister Shri Modi expressed confidence that the North East’s progress would propel India to new heights, transforming “Ashtalakshmi” (symbol of the North East’s potential) into a guiding force for a Developed India.

The event saw the presence of Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, along with Governors and Chief Ministers from North Eastern states.
