Nuakhai, primarily celebrated with immense fervor in Western Odisha and adjoining regions, marks the arrival of freshly harvested rice, or Nabanna. Rooted deep in ancient agrarian traditions, the festival begins with offering the season’s first crop to the presiding deities, such as Goddess Samaleswari, as a token of devotion and thanksgiving. Families come together in traditional attire to share the sanctified meal, while elders offer blessings during the customary ritual of Nuakhai Bhetghat. The air fills with the beats of the dhol, nishan, and mahuri as folk dances like Sambalpuri and Rasarkeli bring communities together in unbridled celebration.
