New Delhi: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the media at the Hans Dwar of Parliament House, marking the commencement of the Monsoon Session. He expressed optimism that the legislative session will feature productive, high-level discussions aimed at bolstering India’s ongoing developmental journey.
Emphasizing the collective responsibility of the lawmakers, the Prime Minister noted that the public holds immense expectations for the Parliament. He called upon all political parties to ensure the smooth running of the houses, stating that the allocated time should be used effectively to debate critical national issues rather than managing frequent disruptions. Modi welcomed all members of Parliament and reiterated the government’s openness to debating all relevant topics under parliamentary guidelines.
The Monsoon Session, scheduled to run from July 20 to August 13, is expected to span 19 sittings over 25 days. The legislative agenda for the session includes the introduction of five major bills focusing on economic reforms, governance, and the judicial framework. Key among these are the Income Tax Amendment Bill, the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Amendment Bill, and the Supreme Court Number of Judges Amendment Bill, which proposes to increase the sanctioned strength of apex court judges from 33 to 37.
Additionally, the session marks the parliamentary debut of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India, following a merger of 20 rebel Trinamool Congress members of Parliament who have aligned with the National Democratic Alliance. Meanwhile, opposition benches have indicated plans to corner the government on key issues, including the recent national eligibility entrance exam paper leaks and regional development concerns.
