PM Congratulates Nepal PM

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today extended his warmest wishes to the Right Honourable Sushila Karki on her appointment as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal.

In a statement released on X, formerly Twitter, PM Shri Modi reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of Nepal.

Sushila Karki, a respected jurist and former Chief Justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court, was sworn in as the head of the interim government following weeks of widespread Gen Z-led protests across the country. These protests, initially sparked by a social media ban, quickly evolved into a broader youth movement against systemic corruption, nepotism, and political stagnation.

The appointment of Smt.Karki, widely seen as a neutral and anti-corruption figure, was a key demand of the protest movement, which sought a leader with integrity who could guide the nation through this tumultuous period. She is now the first woman to hold the executive head of government position in Nepal’s history.

Known for her judicial independence and firm stance against corruption, Karki’s career has been marked by several landmark rulings. She served as Nepal’s first female Chief Justice from 2016 to 2017.

Her tenure was briefly interrupted by a controversial impeachment motion, which was widely seen as a political maneuver to curb her authority, but was ultimately withdrawn.

Smt.Karki also has a strong connection to India, having completed her post-graduate studies in political science at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. Her selection as the interim leader has been hailed by many as a step towards restoring public trust in government institutions. Her primary mandate is to restore stability and conduct new elections within six months.
