Pact For Port Development

Bhubaneswar: In a significant push to bolster its maritime economy, the Odisha government today signed two major concession agreements for the development of Gopalpur Port and the construction of a captive jetty at Jatadhara mouth, signaling a new era of port-led development and job creation in the state.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi presided over the signing ceremony at Lok Seva Bhawan, emphasizing the government’s priority on establishing robust port infrastructure.

The agreements will bring a combined investment of Rs 18,654 crore and are projected to generate approximately 8,450 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Key Projects Underway:

  • Captive Jetty at Jatadhara Mouth: A concession agreement was signed with JSW Utkal Steel Limited for the construction of a captive jetty at Jatadhara mouth in Ersama tehsil of Jagatsinghpur district. This project entails an initial investment of Rs 2,100 crore and is designed to handle a substantial 52 million metric tons of cargo. It is expected to create 3,450 direct and indirect jobs.
  • Gopalpur Port Expansion and Upgradation: Gopalpur Ports Limited (an Adani Ports entity) has entered into a concession agreement with the Odisha Government for the expansion and upgradation of Gopalpur Port. This ambitious project will see an investment of Rs 16,554 crore, significantly increasing the port’s cargo handling capacity to 50 million metric tons. This expansion is anticipated to generate direct and indirect employment for around 5,000 youth.

Chief Minister Shri Majhi highlighted the state’s strategic approach of partnering with private companies for maritime trade development. He underscored the global repute of Gopalpur Port Limited (Adani Ports) and JSW Steel in port development and steel production, respectively, expressing confidence that their involvement will usher in a “new era in our port-led development.”

Looking ahead, the Chief Minister announced plans for two new ports to be established at Inchudi and Bahuda, along with the continued development of Subarnarekha and Astaranga ports.

Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena reiterated the critical role of port and jetty development in Odisha’s holistic growth. He emphasized the government’s commitment to identifying potential sites along Odisha’s extensive coastline for the development of non-major ports, jetties, fishing ports, and coastal transport infrastructure.

The signing ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Fisheries and Livestock Development Minister Gokulanand Mallick, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Development Commissioner Anu Garg, and Additional Chief Secretary, Industries, Hemant Sharma, alongside officials from JSW Utkal Steel and Gopalpur Ports Limited.

Principal Secretary, Commerce and Transport, Usha Padhee delivered the welcome address, and Additional Secretary Bidhan Roy proposed the vote of thanks.
