Bhubaneswar: In recent years, the eastern state of Odisha has quietly and confidently transformed itself into a sporting powerhouse, earning the moniker of “India’s Sports Capital.” This journey, fueled by a strategic vision and significant investment, is culminating in a new high with the hosting of India’s first-ever World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze-level meet in Bhubaneswar. This event is not just another tournament; it is a clear statement of intent and a testament to the state’s long-term commitment to a robust sports ecosystem.
The foundation of Odisha’s success lies in its comprehensive “Panchayat-to-Podium” model. Recognizing the immense potential of its youth, the government has embarked on an ambitious plan to build multi-disciplinary stadiums in all 314 blocks of the state. These facilities, coupled with integrated coaching centers and residential sports academies, are designed to scout and nurture talent from the grassroots level. This sustained investment is already bearing fruit, with the state producing celebrated athletes like sprinter Dutee Chand, javelin thrower Kishore Jena, and para-badminton star Pramod Bhagat, as well as contributing numerous players to the national hockey teams.
Odisha’s reputation has also been built on its proven ability to host world-class international events. From the Asian Athletics Championships in 2017 to the FIH Hockey World Cups in 2018 and 2023, the state has consistently showcased its state-of-the-art infrastructure, particularly at the iconic Kalinga Stadium. These tournaments have not only elevated the state’s global standing but have also fostered a vibrant sports culture among its citizens. The upcoming Continental Tour meet, featuring over 90 Indian athletes alongside competitors from 16 countries, serves as another crucial step, offering a platform for Indian athletes to qualify for the World Championships.
Looking ahead, the ambition remains sky-high. As Sachin R. Jadhav, Secretary, Sports & Youth Services Department, Government of Odisha, noted, the state is already setting its sights on hosting even bigger events, such as the Asian Junior and World Junior Championships in Athletics. This forward-looking approach, which combines world-class facilities with a deep-rooted commitment to grassroots development, ensures that Odisha’s sporting renaissance is not a fleeting moment but a sustainable model for the future of Indian sports.
