Odisha’s Rainy Fortune

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is experiencing a highly active monsoon season, with cumulative rainfall from June 1st to July 31st, 2025, reaching an impressive 613.9 mm. This figure stands significantly above the normal rainfall of 550.7 mm for the same period, signaling a promising outlook for the state’s agricultural sector and water reservoirs.

According to the latest data, the monsoon’s bounty has been largely widespread across the state. Out of Odisha’s 30 districts, 9 have recorded “Excess” rainfall, while 17 districts are in the “Normal” category. However, 4 districts still face “Deficient” rainfall, indicating localized variations that warrant continued monitoring.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued active monsoon conditions across Odisha in the coming days. A cyclonic circulation over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha coast, coupled with an active monsoon trough, are the primary drivers of this wet spell.

Orange Warning (Heavy to Very Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph): Districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Bhadrak are advised to prepare for intense weather.

Yellow Warning (Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph): Balasore, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Sundargarh, Angul, Deogarh, and Dhenkanal districts should remain vigilant.

Yellow Warning (Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph): Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts are also under a thunderstorm alert.

Residents are cautioned about the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas, particularly in urban centers, which could lead to traffic disruptions. Localized landslides and mudslides are also a concern in hilly regions. Strong winds accompanying thunderstorms may cause minor damage to temporary structures and standing crops.

Authorities have urged farmers to stay informed about weather advisories and take necessary precautions to safeguard their crops. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast due to anticipated squally winds and rough to very rough sea conditions.

The overall monsoon outlook for Odisha remains positive, with the current surplus in rainfall and the forecast for continued wet weather being highly beneficial for the state. However, vigilance and adherence to IMD warnings are crucial for public safety and preparedness.
