Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a serious warning for Odisha, predicting widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state for the next three days. This intense weather is due to a cyclonic circulation in the northern Bay of Bengal, expected to strengthen into a low-pressure area soon, boosting monsoon activity.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar highlights that a “double low-pressure system” is causing this weather pattern, increasing the risk of severe downpours and disruptions.
Rainfall Forecast (July 13 – July 16, 2025):
- Today (July 13): A Yellow Alert is active for 24 districts, with 7 to 11 cm of rain expected, and localized very heavy rain possible. Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Bargarh are under an Orange Warning for very heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are also forecast for coastal and interior areas.
- Tomorrow (July 14): Yellow and Orange Alerts continue. Northern Odisha, especially Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh, face high alert for intense to extremely heavy downpours. Heavy rainfall is also expected in many other districts, accompanied by thunderstorms.
- Day After Tomorrow (July 15-16): Heavy rainfall will persist across the state until July 16. Yellow Warnings for heavy rain are in place for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Sambalpur, with continued thunderstorm alerts for several coastal and northern districts. Rainfall intensity is expected to decrease after July 17.
Potential Impacts and Safety Advice: Residents should prepare for potential damage to crops, temporary structures, and power lines. There’s a risk of localized urban flooding, waterlogging on roads, and traffic disruptions. Landslides and mudslides are also possible in hilly areas.
Public Advisory: Stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, and avoid unnecessary travel. Do not shelter under trees during thunderstorms, and unplug electrical appliances. Stay out of water bodies and away from electrical conductors. Check traffic updates before traveling and avoid flood-prone zones. Fishermen are strongly advised to stay off the sea due to rough conditions.
State and local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are on high alert. Residents in vulnerable districts should remain vigilant and follow IMD advisories.
