Odisha Braces For Heavy Rain

Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast. The Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) at SOA Deemed to be University announced Tuesday that this system is likely to intensify into a depression by Thursday.

The CEC bulletin indicates the system will likely move northeastward along the Odisha coast. This will bring widespread rainfall across the state, with heavy to very heavy precipitation expected in coastal and northern districts.

The highest intensity of rainfall is anticipated between May 28 and 30. Districts most likely to be affected include Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Khurda, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Nayagarh, and Ganjam.

There’s also a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the catchment regions of the Baitarani, Subarnarekha, and Budhabalang rivers. This widespread rain may also facilitate the onset of the southwest monsoon over Odisha by Thursday.

Following this wet spell, a dry period with rising temperatures is expected between June 1 and 3, after which rainfall is projected to increase again.
