Nuapada Records 75% Turnout

Bhubaneswar: The Nuapada Assembly constituency in Odisha successfully concluded its high-stakes by-election, recording an impressive voter turnout of approximately 75.37% as of the 5:00 PM reporting time. This significant turnout underscores the intense political mobilization and the importance the electorate placed on this contest, which is viewed as the first major test for the new state government.

The by-poll was necessitated by the death of sitting Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA Rajendra Dholakia. The election turned into a fierce three-way battle: the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had fielded Jay Dholakia, the late MLA’s son; the BJD nominated former MLA Snehangini Chhuria; and the Congress party put forward veteran Ghasiram Majhi.

Polling concluded successfully across all 358 polling stations. All eight helicopters, used for the crucial airlifting of polling personnel and materials to remote, sensitive, and Maoist-affected booths, have safely returned, confirming the successful wrapping up of security and logistical operations.

A minor technical issue involving the replacement of one Electronic Voting Machine set (Ballot Unit, Control Unit, and VVPAT) at Booth No. 246 was swiftly addressed by the election officials, ensuring continuous voting.

The campaign saw major parties focusing on themes of regional development, welfare schemes, and tribal issues. Allegations of administrative misuse and violations of the Model Code of Conduct were exchanged between the BJD and the BJP, adding to the charged political environment. The result on November 14 will not only determine who wins the seat but will also be widely interpreted as a political barometer for the state’s shifting political landscape.
