New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has released the schedule for the crucial by-election to the Nuapada Assembly constituency in Odisha, a seat left vacant by the death of sitting Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA Rajendra Dholakia.
Shri Dholakia, a senior leader and former minister, passed away on September 8, 2025, at the age of 68 due to kidney ailments. He had secured the seat in the 2024 Odisha Assembly elections with a commanding 52% vote share.
The bypoll, which will take place in the tribal-dominated region, is scheduled for November 11, 2025, aligning with the second phase of the Bihar Assembly elections. The counting of votes is slated for three days later, on November 14, 2025.
Key Dates for the Nuapada By-election:
- Gazette Notification: October 13, 2025
- Last Date for Filing Nominations: October 20, 2025
- Scrutiny of Nominations: October 22, 2025
- Withdrawal of Candidatures: October 24, 2025
- Polling Date: November 11, 2025
- Counting of Votes: November 14, 2025
The ECI has also finalised the electoral roll for the constituency, with the final publication scheduled for October 9, 2025.
The Nuapada by-election is one of eight assembly byelections announced across seven states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Punjab, and Telangana. The synchronisation with Bihar’s two-phase polls (November 6 and 11) is intended to streamline logistical operations for the ECI.
With the seat being a BJD stronghold, the bypoll is expected to be a significant test for the Opposition BJD in Odisha and the Governing BJP, setting the stage for an intense electoral battle in the constituency, which is known for its significant tribal population and reliance on agriculture.
All major political parties, including the BJP, BJD, and Congress, have commenced preparations, and candidate announcements are expected shortly.
