Bhubaneswar: Justice V. Ramasubramanian, Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), spoke at Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University (SOA) in Bhubaneswar. He emphasized that the purpose of holistic education extends beyond intellectual expansion to encompass the shaping of character and the physical, mental, moral, and spiritual development of an individual.
He highlighted Swami Vivekananda’s four parameters for education: equipping individuals with knowledge, intellect, and spiritual awareness for a fulfilling life. Mr. Justice Ramasubramanian stressed that education is a lifelong process, extending “from womb to tomb,” and questioned whether current educational systems truly prepare students for life’s challenges, particularly in developing mental strength and resilience. He noted the increased stress among students today compared to previous generations, attributing it to a lack of preparedness for adversity.
Citing the 2008 Global Financial Crisis as an example, he narrated the tragic story of a successful chartered accountant who, despite his achievements, lacked the mental fortitude to cope with loss, leading to a family tragedy. This underscored his point that true education should equip individuals with “crisis management” skills and the right attitude, not just degrees.
Mr. Justice Ramasubramanian concluded by congratulating SOA for its progress and commitment. The event was attended by SOA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda, Prof. Santosh Kumar Rout, Prof. Pabhat Kumar Sarangi, and Prof. Renu Sharma.
