Nearly 12 Lakh Youth Unemployed

Bhubaneswar: Nearly 12 lakh educated youths including 4.28 lakh females have remained unemployed in the State and they are searching for jobs.

According to official data, 11,97,497 unemployed youths including those passed out from class-10, class-12, degree, master degree, and technical education courses have registered their names in the employment exchanges.

Out of the total registered job aspirants, 7,69,194 are male and 4,28,303 are female. Similarly, 1,54,796 belong to SC, ST communities.

Maximum number of 1 lakh unemployed youths registered themselves for jobs at the state employment exchange while the lowest 7498 number of youths registered at the district employment exchange of Boudh district.   

Similarly, 3828 physically handicapped (PH) persons have also registered at the special employment exchange for PH persons.

Among districts, 58,441 unemployed youths have registered with the employment exchange of Puri, followed by Berhampur in Ganjam district (56,845), Rourkela in Sundergarh (51,679), Kendrapara (51,354), and Balasore (47,839).

Among the total unemployed youths, 3.17 lakh are graduates, 48,678 post graduates and 4.20 lakh intermediates, 1.79 lakh matriculates and 48,755 diploma pass out students have registered themselves with different employment exchanges of the State.

Similarly, 54,694 trained teachers, 34,332 ITI passed out students, 13,808 under matric students are waiting for jobs in the State.

Interestingly, 837 postgraduates in medical courses and two medical graduates were also waiting to get a job in the State.

The data also shows that 7877 engineering graduates are also searching for a job.

Odisha stood at the 21st position among all states and union territories in the unemployment rate list, as per the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2022-23 conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSO).

The employment scenario in the urban areas is worse than in the rural areas in the state. While the unemployment rate in rural areas is 3.6 percent, it is 6.2 percent in the urban areas, sources said.
