Naveen Faces Heat

Bhubaneswar: The entry of Dilip Ray into the Rajya Sabha fray marks perhaps the most precarious moment in BJD Supremo Naveen Patnaik’s nearly three-decade political career.

In 2002, even when the Biju Janata Dal held the reins of power, Shri Ray managed to engineer a sensational victory as an independent by leveraging his personal networks and triggering large-scale cross-voting from BJD legislators.

Today, the landscape is far more hostile for the BJD supremo. Having lost state power in the 2024 assembly elections, Shri Patnaik no longer wields the same administrative or patronage-based control over his flock that he once did.

The current political climate is defined by an unprecedented wave of internal dissent within the BJD. High-profile leaders like Arvind Mohapatra have openly challenged Shri Patnaik’s leadership, and the party has been forced to take drastic disciplinary actions to stem the tide of rebellion.

Shri Ray’s candidacy is specifically designed to exploit these existing fissures. By appearing as an independent with the backing of the BJP’s surplus votes, former Union Minister provides a safe harbor for disgruntled BJD MLAs who may wish to express their dissatisfaction with the current party leadership under the cover of a conscience vote.

Shri Patnaik’s decision to form a strategic alliance with the Congress to support a common candidate, Dr. Datteswar Hota, is a defensive maneuver born of necessity, but it also highlights the BJD’s diminished status.

Shri Ray needs to secure only about eight to nine additional votes to bridge the gap, a feat he accomplished with ease when the BJD was at its peak.

With the BJP now holding the levers of state power and several BJD veterans feeling sidelined, the threat of an internal collapse is higher than ever.

For the Biju Janata Dal supremo, this is not just a battle for a fourth seat; it is a fight to prevent a total disintegration of party discipline at a time when his leadership is being questioned from all sides.
