New Delhi/Amaravati: Cyclonic Storm ‘Montha’ (Mon-Tha) has intensified and is on a track to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast as a Severe Cyclonic Storm on the evening or night of Tuesday, October 28, 2025. Authorities in coastal states, particularly Andhra Pradesh, have been placed on high alert as the cyclone’s path points towards the region between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, specifically around Kakinada.
Current Status and Trajectory
As of 0530 hrs IST today, October 27, 2025, the Cyclonic Storm “Montha” was centered over the Southwest and adjoining Westcentral and Southeast Bay of Bengal, near latitude 12.2°N & longitude 85.3°E.
It has moved northwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph over the past six hours.
The system is currently situated approximately 560 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 620 km south-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 650 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 790 km south of Gopalpur (Odisha), and 810 km west of Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands).
Forecast and Landfall Details
The storm is projected to continue its northwestward movement over the Southwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal for the next 12 hours. It will then shift to a north-northwestward track and is very likely to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by the morning of October 28.
The most critical forecast indicates that Cyclone Montha will cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening or night of October 28. At the time of landfall, the storm is expected to have a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.
Preparedness and Warnings
In light of the severe weather threat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued extensive warnings. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Odisha are bracing for the impact, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and gale-force winds expected to cause widespread disruption. Disaster management teams (NDRF/SDRF) have been pre-positioned, and the evacuation of vulnerable populations in low-lying coastal areas is underway. Fisherfolk have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea.
