Bhubaneswar: The latest edition of “Odisha Manaska,” a monthly circle organized by “All Things Odisha,” offered a captivating exploration of the monsoon’s profound influence on Odisha’s identity, igniting discussions that highlighted the state’s potential for “Monsoon Tourism.”
Under the theme “Monsoon Melody: Kebe Khusi Kebe Tragedy (How the Monsoon has shaped Odisha’s identity?),” around 20 participants from diverse backgrounds gathered to share their perspectives on the monsoon’s multifaceted role – from its romanticized beauty to its undeniable impact on the socio-economic and cultural fabric of Odisha.
While acknowledging the challenges posed by the monsoon, including droughts, famines (like the historic Na’anka famine), and cyclones, the session lauded the remarkable resilience of the Odia people in confronting these natural adversities. This spirit of endurance, deeply ingrained in the state’s identity, was a key takeaway from the discussion.
Eminent attendees, including food researcher Ritu Pattnaik, writer and heritage expert Anil Dhir, and Pranay Manjari, Director of Safe Odisha For Her, contributed their valuable insights to the lively forum. The session was skillfully conducted by Sandip Bal and Sonali Priyadarsini.
A significant suggestion emerging from the discussion was the immense potential for monsoon tourism in Odisha. Participants emphasized that the state, with its lush landscapes, gushing waterfalls, and revitalized natural beauty during the rainy season, offers a unique and appealing experience for travelers seeking to witness the monsoon in its full glory.
Kshitish Panda, a student from TISS Mumbai, praised “Odisha Manaska” for fostering such nuanced discussions on Odia identity, stating he gained invaluable perspectives on the “melody and mayhem” of the monsoon.
This “Odisha Manaska” session serves as a compelling reminder that beyond the challenges, the monsoon also unveils a different, verdant, and vibrant side of Odisha, ripe for exploration by tourists seeking an authentic and refreshing experience. The call for promoting monsoon tourism resonates with the state’s natural beauty and the inherent resilience of its people, offering a unique opportunity to showcase Odisha’s distinctive charm during the rainy season.
