Bhubaneswar: Senior BJP legislator and tribal leader Mohan Charan Majhi has been elected as the Leader of BJP Legislature Party and set to take oath as the new Chief Minister of Odisha tomorrow.
Shri Majhi has been unanimously elected as the Leader of the BJP Legislature Party at its first meeting held here at BJP Headquarters in presence of all senior BJP leaders including Dharmendra Pradhan & Ashwnini Vaishnaw and two Central observers Rajnath Singh and Bhupinder Yadav.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Rajnath Singh said Patnagarh MLA K V Singh Deo has proposed the name of Mohan Majhi for the leader of BJP legislature party and Surama Padhy, Rabi Narayan Naik, Laxman Bag and Prithiviraj Harichandan have supported the proposal. All the members of BJP Legislature Party have also welcomed the decision by clapping, he said.
“I announce that Mohan Majhi has been unanimously elected as the leader of BJP Legislature Party, Odisha,” he said.
As per designate Chief Minister’s consent, the names of the two deputy CMs have been announced, he said.
On X, the Defence Minister said, “Delighted to announce that Shri Mohan Charan Majhi has been elected unanimously as the leader of Odisha BJP Legislature Party. He is a young and dynamic karyakarta who will take the state forward on the road to progress and prosperity as the new Chief Minister of Odisha. Many congratulations to him.”
Also, it has been decided that two Deputy Chief Ministers will be designated to head the new State Government. KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida will serve the state as Deputy Chief Minister. Congratulations to them, he added.
Shri Majhi (52), born on January 6, 1972, is set to head the first BJP Government as an Indian politician. He was elected to the State Legislative Assembly from Keonjhar in the 2019 Odisha Legislative Assembly election as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He also represented Keonjhar twice during the years 2000 to 2009.
Shri Majhi, who started his career as a Sarpanch from 1997-2000, was first elected to the State Assembly from Keonjhar in 2000. He was re-elected in 2004 and again in 2019. In the recent polls, he retained the seat by defeating BJD’s Mina Majhi by 11,577 votes.
In the previous Assembly, Shri Majhi was the opposition Chief Whip, who took on the BJD government on many crucial issues.
The announcement comes a week after the BJP stormed to power in the State on its own for the first time by winning 78 out of 147 seats.
Shri Majhi will take over from Naveen Patnaik, the BJD Chief who retained power for well over two decades and cast a long shadow on the State’s politics.
