Bhubaneswar: The Executive Committee of the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) convened today to strategize the future of Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon. Presided over by Shri Satyabrat Sahu, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department, the session focused on balancing ecological preservation with the socio-economic needs of the local communities.
During the proceedings, Shri Sahu emphasized the importance of accountability and urgency. He issued clear directives to the Authority to ensure all developmental and conservation projects are executed within their designated timelines while strictly adhering to established legal procedures and environmental guidelines.
Chief Executive of the CDA, Shri M. Yogjayananda, provided a comprehensive briefing on the current operational status of the lagoon. His presentation covered critical areas including routine maintenance, biodiversity monitoring, and the complex task of managing the salt water table through desiltation. He also highlighted ongoing efforts in fisheries development and initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of the thousands of families dependent on the Chilika ecosystem.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the Integrated Management Plan for both Chilika and Ansupa Lakes. To ensure the long-term health of these water bodies, the committee discussed the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) by experts from IIT Madras. This technical collaboration aims to optimize water exchange and drainage patterns, which are vital for maintaining the delicate salinity balance and overall health of the ecosystem.
Administrative and fiscal matters were also at the forefront of the agenda. The committee reviewed the CDA’s research activities, procurement protocols, and establishment matters. Furthermore, the budget estimates for the upcoming financial year were deliberated upon to ensure adequate funding for scientific research and field operations.
The high-level meeting saw participation from various experts and government officials, including Shri Prem Kumar Jha, PCCF (Wildlife); the Director of Environment; and expert member Dr. Ajit Patnaik. Representatives from the Water Resources and Fisheries Departments were also present to provide inter-departmental coordination for the holistic management of the lagoon.
