New Delhi: Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, PMO, Atomic Energy, Space, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, today unveiled the electronic Civil List 2025, a comprehensive digital compendium of serving Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers nationwide. This 70th edition of the Civil List marks its fifth iteration in a fully digital e-book format.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the enduring allure of the IAS for the nation’s brightest minds and its crucial role in bolstering India’s federal structure. He underscored the Civil List’s significance as a tool for transparency, providing a clear overview of the country’s administrative leadership.
Looking ahead, Dr. Singh proposed integrating AI-powered search capabilities into the e-Civil List. He suggested that this enhancement could facilitate targeted searches based on specific domains, enabling the identification of suitable officers for mission-mode projects and other government initiatives, while ensuring appropriate access controls. He also stressed the need for regular updates to maintain the digital list’s accuracy and relevance.
Published by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the e-book offers a wealth of information on IAS officers, including their name, batch, cadre, current posting, pay level, educational background, and retirement dates, as of January 1, 2025. Notably, this edition also includes cadre-wise strength, the number of retiring officers over the next five years, appointment data since 1969, and for the first time, officers’ photographs.
Designed as a searchable PDF with embedded hyperlinks, the e-book boasts a user-friendly interface for instant information retrieval. Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted that “the Civil List is an important resource not just for administrators and decision-makers but also for the general public,” emphasizing the launch as a reflection of the government’s broader commitment to digital governance.
As the cadre-controlling authority for IAS officers, the DoPT compiles the Civil List annually using data from central records and state cadres. The 2025 edition reflects a total authorized cadre strength of 6,877 officers, with 5,577 currently serving across 25 state cadres.
The launch event witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Mr. S.N. Tripathi, Director General of the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA); Mr. Sriram Taranikanti, IAS, Director and Chairperson of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA); and Ms. Rachna Shah, Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), alongside other senior officials.
