Marathon Boosts Hirakud Tourism

Sambalpur: The official logo and jersey for the Hirakud International Half Marathon 2026 were unveiled by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan during a ceremony in Sambalpur. The event, scheduled to take place on February 15, is designed to give the iconic Hirakud region a distinct identity on the global map while providing a significant boost to the tourism sector in Sambalpur.

Joining Shri Pradhan at the launch were several high-ranking officials, including Rural Development Minister Rabi Narayan Naik, Sports and Youth Services Minister Surjyanbanshi Suraj, and IGP Northern Range Himanshu Kumar Lal. The presence of these personalities underscores the state and central government’s commitment to promoting sports and infrastructure development in the region.

Organized by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) with the full support of the Odisha Government, the marathon features various categories to ensure inclusivity. These include the flagship 21 km half marathon, a 10 km competitive run, a 5 km run, and a 1.5 km fun run intended for families and children. This variety aims to attract a wide demographic, ranging from professional international athletes to local fitness enthusiasts.

During his address, Shri Pradhan emphasized that the program is not merely a race but a mission to build a healthy Sambalpur and a healthy Odisha. He urged people from all sections of society to register in large numbers and help spread awareness about the event. By integrating the scenic beauty of the Hirakud Dam with a world-class sporting event, the organizers hope to create a lasting impact on the local economy and inspire a culture of physical fitness across the state.
