New Delhi: In an unexpected move, senior tribal leader Mamata Mohanta today resigned from Rajya Sabha and Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
This sudden move of Shrimati Mohanta has created a buzz in the political circle in Odisha and also at national level.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar informed the Upper House that Shrimati Mohanta’s resignation has been accepted as he found it on order.
In her resignation letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman, Shrimati Mohanta said, “I do hereby tender my resignation from the membership of Rajya Sabha, today, i.e. 31st July, 2024, I have taken this decision consciously,”
She expressed her gratitude to the Chairman for the opportunities given to her to raise issues of public importance in the House.
The woman tribal leader has also resigned from the BJD and sent her resignation to BJD Supremo Naveen Patnaik.
“I do hereby resign from the Primary Membership of Biju Janata Dal today. I sincerely express my gratitude to your goodself for giving me an opportunity to serve the people of Mayurbhanj and also to take the cause of Odisha at the national level,” she said in her resignation letter from BJD.
However, Mohanta said she felt that there is no requirement of her services as well as her community in the BJD. Therefore, she has taken this hard decision in the public interest.
Following the resignation of Shrimati Mohanta from RS, the BJD strength in the Upper House went down to 8. With 21 months left to her six-year tenure, BJP is likely to send someone from Odisha in her place, political observers feel.
