Bhubaneswar: As expected, the BJP has nominated senior tribal leader Mamata Mohanta for the Rajya Sabha by-poll, scheduled to be held on September 3.
The BJP National Headquarters has announced the name of Shrimati Mohanta for the lone RS seat lying vacant following her resignation last month.
A day after resigning from Rajya Sabha and BJD, Mamata Mohanta had joined the BJP in the party’s National Headquarters on 1 August.
She resigned from the BJD alleging that she was being neglected by the party.
Following the resignation of Shrimati Mohanta from RS, the BJD strength in the Upper House went down to 8.
With 21 months left to her six-year tenure, Shrimati Mohanta again all set to elect to the Upper House from Odisha from BJP.
By nominating Shrimati Mohanta, the BJP has played a ‘Tribal Card’, which may help the party to woo the Kudumi community in Odisha and Jharkhand.
As per schedule, the last date for filing of poll papers is 21 August.
The nominations will be scrutinised on 22 August, while candidates can withdraw their nominations by 27 August.
The election for each Rajya Sabha seat will be held on 3 September and the results will be announced the same day.
The polling will be conducted from 9 AM to 4 PM.
