Malkangiri: Internet services have been fully restored across Malkangiri district today, concluding a precautionary suspension that was put in place following the violent clashes in the MV-26 area earlier this month. The restoration of communication services marks a significant step towards complete normalcy in the region.
The internet shutdown, which had been repeatedly extended, was imposed by the district administration to curb the spread of misinformation and rumors after clashes erupted between residents of MV-26 and neighboring Rakhelguda village following a murder. The unrest led to extensive arson and vandalism, with estimated damages to property totaling approximately ₹3.80 crore.
While the internet is back online, a high level of vigilance is being maintained by the security forces. The district administration confirmed that the overall situation is stabilizing, and normal life is gradually returning to the affected villages. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which were earlier imposed, have been withdrawn, allowing for greater freedom of movement for residents.
Police have made a total of 18 arrests in connection with the violence and arson incidents as investigations continue. Security forces, including BSF and State Armed Police, remain deployed at sensitive locations to prevent any fresh flare-ups.
Relief and rehabilitation efforts are ongoing in the affected areas. Essential services, including electricity and drinking water supply, have been fully restored. The administration is distributing cooked food, blankets, and other necessities to the displaced families, and efforts are underway to assess and expedite compensation for the damaged properties. Schools, which were temporarily closed, are also set to reopen soon.
Senior officials are continuing their engagement with leaders from both the tribal and settler communities to build confidence and ensure a long-term peaceful coexistence in the region, which has a history of disputes over land rights. The return of internet services is expected to aid the process of normalization, although authorities remain alert to monitor online activity for any inflammatory content.
