Bhubaneswar: The Government of Odisha, in collaboration with urban development authorities and environmental experts, is proud to announce the conceptualization of the Mahanadi Waterfront project. This transformative initiative is set to redefine the Mahanadi Riverfront, turning it into a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive space that merges ecological conservation with urban development. The project will enhance the quality of life for locals, promote tourism, and preserve the river’s rich cultural, historical, and environmental heritage.
A high level meeting was held today chaired by Minister H&UD, Krushna Chandra Mahapatra. Among others Bhartruhari Mahatab , MP , Cuttack ,Sofia Firdous MLA Cuttack-Barabati , Souvik Biswal MLA Cuttack-Choudwar , Prakas Chandra Sethy MLA Cuttack Sadar , Mayer CMC Subhas Singh , Usha Padhee Principal Secretary H&UD , Collector Cuttack , VC CDA , Commissioner CMC and Senior Officer from Water Resources , Forest & Climate Changes were present in the meeting held in Kharabela Bhawan and participated in the discussion.
They also advised to start the work immediately as per the DPR and at least the Bali Yatra ground may ready accordingly before the coming Balijatra.
The Mahanadi Waterfront development is envisioned as a world-class urban and recreational space that caters to the needs of the local community, promotes ecological sustainability, preserves cultural heritage, and fosters economic growth. Smart technology will be integrated for efficient waste management, water monitoring, and ensuring public safety.
As a premier eco-tourism destination, the Mahanadi Waterfront will offer water sports like boating, kayaking, and river cruises. Event spaces will host music and food festivals, local cultural performances, and more, attracting both national and international tourists.
The project will create accessible parks, playgrounds, and recreational zones for seniors, children, and differently-abled individuals. It will also encourage local artisans, farmers, and small businesses to set up markets and kiosks, promoting indigenous craftsmanship and products.
To mitigate the risk of seasonal flooding, the waterfront will incorporate flood protection infrastructure, such as embankments, elevated walkways, and flood barriers. Green infrastructure solutions, including rainwater harvesting and permeable surfaces, will be integrated to enhance climate resilience.
