Bhubaneswar: Congress Veteran and former Union Minister Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday urged Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) leaders to support his candidature for the AICC president election.
Mr.Kharge met the State Congress leaders here and requested all of them to vote in his favour to revive the age-old party and to defeat BJP in the coming election.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Mr.Kharge said he has resigned from Leader of Opposition post and filed nominations for the AICC President election after receiving calls from many of his party leaders.
The Congress Veteran said he has no other manifesto to contest the election within the party. He will implement the outcomes of the Chintan Shivir held at Udaipur in Rajasthan four months ago.
“There were six committees formed by experts; political affairs, organizational affairs, social justice, agriculture, economy and foreign affairs in the party. The gist and outcome of all these committees was brainstormed at the Udaipur declaration. And my job will be to implement all those on the ground,” he added.
Mr.Kharge said he is committed to implementing the party’s decision to give priority to leaders of less than 50 years old in decision making.
Mallikarjun Kharge and Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor are in the fray for Congress Presidential poll as the party high command has decided that, this time, no one from Gandhi family will contest for the post.
About 400 leaders from Odisha Congress will vote in the AICC president election. The Congress presidential poll will take place on 17 October , and the results will be declared on 19 October.
