At least five passengers were killed and 30 others seriously injured after a passenger bus fell from an over bridge on NH-16 near Barabati in Jajpur this night.
Carrying nearly 50 passengers, the bus was on its way from Puri to Kolkata. Following the mishap, Fire Services personnel and locals rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations.
The injured were first admitted to Dharmasala CHC. The seriously injured passengers have been shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.
As many as 16 ambulances and five cranes were pressed into service. Immediately, SP Jajpur, RTO, NHAI, CDMO rushed to the spot within 15 min of the accident.
Out of 16 ambulances with two advanced life saving ambulances, 8 ambulances are shifting severely injured to SCB Cuttack.
People with minor injuries are being shifted to Badchana CHC. More ambulances are kept in readiness. So far, five people have expired.
Five cranes are available on the spot lifting the bus and managing the traffic.
Expressing grief over the death of five passengers, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced an ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakh for next to the kin of deceased persons. He also directed health officials to provide free and quality treatment to the injured passengers.
