Bhubaneswar: The state of Odisha witnessed a vibrant display of cultural heritage as people from all walks of life participated in the Ama Poshak Ama Parichaya (Our Attire, Our Identity) Day.
This event is a central part of the ongoing Odia Pakhya celebrations, which are being observed from 1st to 14th April. Organized by the Department of Odia Language, Literature, and Culture, the initiative encourages citizens to embrace traditional handloom as a symbol of the state’s historical depth and artistic diversity.
From rural villages to the urban landscape of Bhubaneswar, the second day of the festivities saw a massive turnout. Officials and staff at the Department of Information and Public Relations joined the movement by arriving at work in traditional garments.
The effort was led by Director, I&PR, Shri Anuj Kumar Das Pattanaik, with Director (Technical) Shri Gurbir Singh and various Information Officers also taking part to promote the campaign’s spirit.
Beyond the visual spectacle of the attire, the day was marked by educational and commemorative activities across various districts. Specialized discussion sessions were conducted on the theme of the Handloom and Weaving Industry of Odisha. These forums aimed to shed light on the technical skill and cultural significance of the state’s weaving traditions. To further engage the younger generation, several exhibitions were organized featuring a wide array of handicrafts and Pattachitra art.
The aesthetic appeal of the celebrations was enhanced by the use of traditional decorative art forms. Intricate displays of Jhoti, Chita, and Muruja adorned many venues, showcasing the domestic artistic traditions of the region. In a gesture of appreciation for those who sustain these crafts, members of various weavers’ and artisans’ cooperative societies were formally felicitated. These celebrations serve as a bridge between Odisha’s illustrious past and its modern identity, ensuring that traditional art forms remain a source of pride for future generations.
