Bhadrak: The Odisha government has ordered a complete shutdown of internet services in Bhadrak district starting early this morning, June 12, 2025. The drastic measure has been implemented as a precautionary step to curb the spread of misinformation and prevent further escalation of religious acrimony between two communities that has led to heightened tensions in the area.
The decision comes after a youth, identified as Santosh Parida of Tihidi, who was injured in a communal clash on May 30, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. His death has reportedly fueled fresh unrest, prompting authorities to act swiftly.
All mobile internet services, including 4G and 5G, as well as broadband and data services, have been suspended across Bhadrak town, Tihidi, and Dhamnagar blocks. This includes popular social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter), which authorities believe are often used to circulate inflammatory messages and incite violence.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh and employment assistance to one family member of the deceased, Santosh Parida. “We stand with the bereaved family and are taking all necessary steps to ensure peace prevails,” the CM stated.
Bhadrak Superintendent of Police (SP) Manoj Rout confirmed that 12 individuals have been arrested in connection with the May 30 incident, with efforts underway to apprehend others involved. “The situation is completely under control. The suspension of internet is a preventive step to avoid misinformation and further tension,” said SP Shri Rout.
To maintain law and order, 27 platoons of police force have been deployed in vulnerable areas across the district. Local leaders are also reportedly engaging in inter-community dialogue to help restore harmony.
Residents of Bhadrak are experiencing significant disruption to their daily lives due to the internet ban. Digital payments, online schooling, communication with relatives, and various business operations that rely heavily on internet connectivity have been severely impacted.
The district has a history of communal sensitivity, with previous internet shutdowns imposed in response to similar incidents. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged the public to cooperate and exercise restraint to ensure a swift return to normalcy. The duration of the internet ban will depend on the evolving law and order situation. Sources
