With the tech sector projected to cross 280 billion dollars in revenue this year, the government is moving to ensure that AI becomes a cornerstone of the national economy, with the potential to add 1.7 trillion dollars to India’s GDP by 2035.
The mission is built upon seven distinct pillars designed to create a comprehensive ecosystem for growth. At the forefront is the compute pillar, which offers high-end processing power at subsidized rates to researchers and startups. Complementing this is the development of indigenous foundational models, ensuring that India possesses sovereign capabilities in generative AI tailored to local languages and cultural contexts. To support this technical growth, the government is also focusing on human capital through the future skills pillar, which aims to train thousands of students and professionals to meet the rising demand for data scientists and AI engineers.
The impact of these initiatives is already visible across various sectors of public life. In agriculture, AI-powered tools like Kisan e-Mitra are helping farmers make data-driven decisions regarding crop health and pest surveillance. In healthcare, AI is being used to detect diseases early and expand telemedicine reach into rural areas. Furthermore, the Bhashini platform is breaking down linguistic barriers by providing AI-driven translation services in 22 Indian languages, ensuring that digital governance is accessible to all citizens regardless of their primary tongue.
Current data highlights India’s rising status on the global stage, with the Stanford University 2025 Global AI Vibrancy Tool ranking India as the third most AI-competitive nation. This success is fueled by a workforce of over 6 million people in the tech ecosystem and a vibrant startup scene where nearly 89 percent of new ventures are integrating AI into their core products.
Looking toward the future, the government has outlined a roadmap through the Digital ShramSetu Mission to empower the nation’s 490 million informal workers. By using voice-first interfaces and smart contracts, the mission aims to remove systemic barriers to financial inclusion and skilling. As India prepares to host the AI Impact Summit in 2026, the focus remains steadfast on the vision of Making AI in India and Making AI Work for India. Through these concerted efforts, the nation is not only chasing economic targets but is also building a digitally empowered and equitable society as part of the broader Viksit Bharat 2047 goal.
