Ahmedabad: The Indian cricket team created history at the Narendra Modi Stadium by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs to secure the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. This victory marks India’s second consecutive title and their third overall, making them the most successful team in the history of the tournament.
Batting first, India set a record-breaking total of 255 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs. Sanju Samson led the charge with a brilliant 89 runs off 46 deliveries, supported by half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. The aggressive batting display left the New Zealand bowlers struggling to contain the run flow throughout the innings.
In response, New Zealand was bowled out for 159 runs in 19 overs. Jasprit Bumrah delivered a decisive performance, taking 4 wickets for 18 runs, while Axar Patel and Varun Chakaravarthy provided key breakthroughs in the middle overs. Despite a resilient fifty from Tim Seifert, the target proved too high for the visitors.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav hoisted the trophy in front of a capacity crowd, celebrating a tournament where India remained undefeated. The win solidifies India’s dominance in the shortest format of the game as they become the first nation to win the trophy on home soil.
