IMD Sends Rain Alert

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a short-term weather warning for the Twin Cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, along with several other districts in Odisha. Residents have been advised to prepare for light rain and thunderstorms expected to move through the region within a three-hour window today, February 24, 2026.

According to the regional meteorological center, this nowcast alert follows a yellow warning issued earlier this morning. The atmospheric instability is being driven by a well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal, which is currently influencing weather patterns across coastal and interior Odisha. In addition to the Twin Cities, districts including Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore are also under the alert.

The IMD warned that these thunderstorms may be accompanied by frequent lightning strikes and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h. Officials have urged the public to stay indoors and move to safe shelters during the storm to avoid lightning-related accidents.

Travelers and commuters in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack should expect temporary disruptions in traffic and minor waterlogging in low-lying areas. While this spell of rain may bring a brief reprieve from daytime heat, the weather office also noted that night temperatures are expected to rise gradually by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next 48 hours.

Looking ahead, the current stormy conditions are expected to subside by tomorrow, with a return to dry weather and potential morning fog in isolated pockets across the coastal belt for the remainder of the week.
