Bhubaneswar: Odisha is currently under the grip of a significant heatwave, characterized by elevated temperatures across various regions. This prolonged period of high temperatures has been causing discomfort and posing potential health risks to the population.
In a welcome development, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting the arrival of Kalbaishakhi rains today, May 19th, 2025. Kalbaishakhi, also known as Nor’wester or Black Storm, are pre-monsoon thunderstorms that are common in eastern India, including Odisha, during the months of April and May.
These storms are typically characterized by intense lightning, strong winds, and heavy rainfall, offering a much-needed respite from the oppressive heat.
The IMD has taken a proactive step by issuing a yellow warning for several districts across Odisha. This warning specifically highlights the likelihood of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. A yellow warning signifies that the weather conditions could potentially cause some impact, and residents are advised to be aware and stay updated on the evolving situation.
As of today, May 19th, the yellow warning for adverse weather conditions is in effect for a significant number of districts, totaling 15. However, the issuance of a warning for such a widespread area indicates a significant weather system impacting the state.
The forecast suggests that the conditions leading to thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are not isolated to just today. The yellow warning is expected to extend over the coming days, remaining in place until May 23rd, 2025. This indicates a sustained period of potential weather disturbances across Odisha.
The IMD’s forecast also includes specific details regarding the potential intensity of the winds associated with these storms. Wind speeds in the affected areas are predicted to reach between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour. Winds of this magnitude can cause minor damage, such as fallen tree branches, unsecured objects being blown away, and potential disruptions to power supply.
While the forecast of Kalbaishakhi rains offers hope for relief from the heat, the coastal districts of Odisha are currently grappling with an additional weather challenge: oppressive humidity. High humidity levels exacerbate the feeling of heat and can lead to significant discomfort, even if the actual temperature is slightly lower.
The forecast notes that this humid condition persists in the coastal regions despite the anticipated showers, suggesting that the initial rainfall might not immediately alleviate the stickiness in the air.
