IMD Alerts Rains Ahead

Bhubaneswar: Under the influence of yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over the southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, a low pressure area formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal at 0530 hrs IST today, the 21st October 2025.

It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further into a depression over the southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal during the next 36 hours.

The west-northwestward movement is typical for such systems during this time of year, often bringing them closer to the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha.

Further updates from the IMD will confirm the exact track and the regions most likely to be affected. The public is advised to stay tuned to official weather forecasts.

This development indicates a potential escalation of the weather system in the region. Monitoring by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) will be crucial for issuing further warnings and advisories regarding its track and intensity.

Coastal areas bordering the Bay of Bengal, particularly those expected to be in the path of the intensifying system, should prepare for adverse weather conditions.

The term low pressure area refers to a region where the atmospheric pressure is lower than that of surrounding locations. This often leads to converging winds, rising air, cloud formation, and precipitation.

The expected intensification into a depression signifies a more organized system with sustained wind speeds of 31 to 38 miles per hour (or 50 to 61 kilometers per hour), bringing the threat of heavy rainfall and squally winds. The current forecast suggests a trajectory towards the Indian coast.
