ICG Cares Olive Ridley Turtles

Bhubaneswar: In a heartwarming victory for marine conservation, the Indian Coast Guard’s (ICG) dedicated annual mission, ‘Operation Olivia,’ has yielded spectacular results this year. A staggering 6.98 lakh Olive Ridley sea turtles were recorded nesting at the Rushikulya river mouth in Odisha during February 2025, marking an unprecedented surge in the population of this vulnerable species at this crucial nesting site.

‘Operation Olivia,’ conducted diligently every year between November and May, transforms the ICG into silent guardians of Odisha’s coastline, particularly the famed Gahirmatha Beach and its adjacent areas. This region typically welcomes over eight lakh Olive Ridley turtles annually, making it one of the most significant mass nesting sites globally. The record-breaking nesting at Rushikulya is a powerful affirmation of the ICG’s persistent efforts to create a safe haven for these gentle ocean wanderers through relentless patrolling, eagle-eyed aerial surveillance, and meaningful engagement with local communities.

Since the inception of this vital operation, the ICG has demonstrated unwavering commitment, executing over 5,387 surface patrol sorties and conducting 1,768 aerial surveillance missions. This intense vigilance has proven remarkably effective in curbing threats that plague these turtles, most notably illegal fishing activities and the destruction of their delicate nesting habitats. The detention of 366 boats involved in illicit fishing during this period underscores the ICG’s firm stance on protecting marine biodiversity.

Beyond their formidable enforcement role, the Coast Guard has fostered a collaborative spirit with local fishing communities. By actively promoting the use of innovative Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs), which allow turtles to escape fishing nets, and forging partnerships with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) through formal Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), the ICG is championing sustainable fishing practices and raising crucial awareness about conservation.

This year’s remarkable nesting numbers at Rushikulya serve as an inspiring testament to the power of sustained conservation efforts and the dedication of the Indian Coast Guard in safeguarding India’s precious marine heritage. As the nesting season continues, the watchful eyes of ‘Operation Olivia’ remain fixed on these ancient mariners, ensuring their journey to lay the foundation for future generations remains undisturbed.
