Bhubaneswar: In a significant recognition of his tireless efforts toward the development of sports in Odisha and across India, ace sports promoter and Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) President Shri Pankaj Lochan Mohanty was felicitated at the International Conference on Social and Educational Chess 2026. The prestigious ceremony took place at the KIIT Deemed to be University in Bhubaneswar on 16 January, held during the ongoing Chess Mahakumbh.
The three day global conference, organized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in association with the All India Chess Federation (AICF) and KIIT, brought together a galaxy of international sports administrators and legends. Shri Mohanty was honored in the presence of distinguished personalities including FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, five time World Champion and FIDE Deputy President Viswanathan Anand, and KIIT and KISS Founder Dr. Achyuta Samanta.
Shri Mohanty, a prominent industrialist and philanthropist, has long been a driving force behind the sports revolution in Odisha. As the President of the OCA, he has been instrumental in modernizing sports infrastructure, including the ongoing renovation of the historic Barabati Stadium in Cuttack and the establishment of new cricket academy. His vision extends beyond cricket, as he has consistently supported budding talents across various disciplines, Chess, Golf, Football etc. helping them transition from grassroots levels to national and international platforms.
The felicitation highlights his role as a versatile promoter who understands the transformative power of sports in education and social inclusion. Under his leadership, the sports ecosystem in the state has seen a significant scale up, reinforcing Odisha’s reputation as a global sports hub. The gathering of experts from over 40 countries acknowledged his commitment to fostering an environment where sports serve as a tool for character building and excellence.
The event at KIIT also marked the launch of the FIDE Year of Chess in Education 2026, where the contributions of leaders like Shri Mohanty were celebrated as essential to the continued growth and professionalization of sports management and talent nurturing in the region.
