Bhubaneswar: Odisha Cabinet has approved a major energy infrastructure project to address the surging power demand in the mineral-rich Keonjhar district. Based on a proposal by OPTCL, the cabinet cleared the construction of a 2×500 MVA, 400/220/33 kV Gas Insulated Sub-station (GIS) at Basudevpur, along with its associated transmission lines. The total estimated cost for the project is Rs. 1,647.00 crore.
The Joda-Barbil-Palaspanga belt is one of the most industrially intensive regions in the state, and current grid sub-stations in Barbil, Joda, and Palaspanga are already operating at maximum capacity. This situation has left the region unable to accommodate additional electrical loads for new industrial projects.
The funding for this project will be split, with the Government of Odisha providing 30 percent equity support amounting to Rs. 494.10 crore. The remaining 70 percent, totaling Rs. 1,152.90 crore, is to be arranged by OPTCL through loans from various banks and financial institutions.
In addition to meeting the needs of upcoming industries in Keonjhar, the project will also serve the adjoining Koida area in Sundargarh district. Beyond individual industrial requirements, the sub-station is expected to strengthen the regional transmission network and facilitate broader industrialization. The project is slated for implementation over a three-year period, spanning from the 2026-27 financial year to the 2028-29 financial year.
