ECI Enforces MCC

New Delhi: The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is now in force following the announcement on October 6, 2025, of the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Bihar and bye-elections to 8 Assembly Constituencies including Nuapada in Odisha.

These provisions apply to all content posted on the internet, including social media, by candidates and political parties.

Under the MCC, criticism of other parties must be restricted to their policies, programmes, past record, and work. Parties and candidates must refrain from criticizing aspects of the private life of leaders or workers that are not connected with public activities. Criticism based on unverified allegations or distortion shall be avoided.

The Commission has advised parties against the misuse of AI-based tools to create deep fakes that distort information or propagate misinformation on social media, emphasizing the need to uphold electoral integrity.

Furthermore, all Political Parties and their leaders, candidates, and star campaigners are required to take measures for the prominent labeling of AI-generated/synthetic content shared for campaigning or as advertisements. Clear notations such as “AI-Generated”, “Digitally Enhanced”, or “Synthetic Content” must be used.

A strict watch is being kept on social media posts to ensure the election atmosphere is not vitiated.

The Commission has made elaborate arrangements for the effective implementation of MCC Guidelines. Any violation of these Guidelines would be dealt with strictly.
