Puri: In a moment of profound spiritual significance that has deeply touched the hearts of millions of devotees across Eastern India, the West Bengal government has taken a decisive step to preserve the sacred purity of Sanatan traditions. The state administration officially announced the removal of the holy designation “Dham” from the newly Shree Jagannath coastal shrine at Digha, bringing a serene resolution to a delicate theological concern and filling the air with a sense of divine harmony.
The spiritual core of the matter rests on the unique status of the historic 12th-century Shree Jagannatha Temple in Puri, Odisha. According to ancient Sanatan Dharma and scriptural traditions codified by Adi Shankaracharya, Puri is recognized globally as one of the four absolute holy “Char Dhams” of Hinduism. The naming of the replica temple complex in Digha as “Jagannath Dham” by the previous state administration in April 2025 had sparked widespread emotional distress and formal protests among standard spiritual custodians, servitors, and scholars who maintained that a newly constructed shrine cannot inherit the scriptural status of an original Dham.
The turning point came when Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi sent a formal proposal requesting a respectful modification to the name, emphasizing that preserving the distinct holy identity of Puri is vital for the spiritual sentiments of millions of devotees worldwide. Upon receiving this official request, West Bengal Chief Minister Shri Suvendu Adhikari acted decisively, announcing that official procedures will be initiated immediately to drop the word “Dham” from the complex. Moving forward, the multi-crore coastal religious site will be known as the Sri Sri Jagannath Mandir Cultural Center. The Chief Minister noted that while all traditional daily rituals, prayers, and worship ceremonies will continue unhindered exactly like a standard temple, the removal of the word ensures full conformity with scriptural protocols and respects the collective consciousness of Sanatan culture.
This administrative and spiritual correction has been greeted with profound joy and relief by the apex administrative authorities of the original Puri shrine. Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, the Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration, expressed immense happiness and spiritual satisfaction regarding the development. He noted that the removal of the term carries heavy emotional and sacred weight for generations of Jagannath lovers. Expressing his deep personal gratitude, Dr. Padhee shared that he felt extremely touched and blessed by the decision, emphasizing that honoring traditional nomenclature preserves the true essence of the ancient faith.
Spiritual leaders, senior servitors, and cultural researchers in Puri have also widely welcomed the decision, viewing it as a historic step that rights a previous error and prevents the dilution of long-standing religious traditions. The peaceful resolution of this delicate theological matter is widely seen as a major victory for cultural harmony and fraternal bonding between the neighboring states of Odisha and West Bengal, allowing the Digha temple to foster genuine spiritual growth while keeping the unassailable prestige of the Puri Shree Jagannatha Dham intact.
