Bhubaneswar: In a major relief for the people of Odisha and State administration, the possible cyclone to be named as Mocha will skip Odisha as the system will head towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coast.
A low pressure area was formed over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea on Monday is likely to intensify into a depression and further into a cyclonic storm over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of eastcentral Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea on May 10, IMD said.
It is likely to move initially north-northwestwards till May 11. Thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually and move north-northeast wards towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts, it said.
Met sources said under influence of the system, squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail over southeast Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and adjoining Andaman Sea on May 8.
Further, squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is likely over southeast Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and adjoining Andaman Sea on May 9.
Fishermen, small ships, boats and trawlers have been advised not to venture into southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Andaman Sea from May 8 onwards and into southeast & adjoining central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea from May 9 onwards.
The farmers were advised to take necessary measures to protect the vegetables, horticulture crops, standing paddy crops, harvested crops if any and paddy in mandis.
The State Government had alerted the district administration to be in readiness to meet any eventuality Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) office sources here said as on date, all 23,727 boats plying are safely berthed and no fishing boat is in the sea.
All field level officers of the Fishery department were advised by the SRC to ensure that fishermen should not venture into the sea in view of the alert warning issued by IMD.
