Cuttack Bans Social Media

Cuttack: Tensions are running high in Cuttack as the city deals with the fallout from a violent clash that erupted during the Durga idol immersion procession late on Friday/early Saturday.

In a bid to curb the spread of rumors and prevent further unrest, the Odisha Home Department has temporarily banned social media services for 24 hours.

The violence, which occurred near the Dargha Bazar area, reportedly started after a confrontation over loud music being played during the immersion procession. The argument quickly escalated into stone-pelting and bottle-throwing between two groups.

Internet services, including apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, have been suspended for a period of 24 hours, starting Sunday evening. The order is set to remain in force until 7 PM on Monday.

Several people were injured in the clash, including Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shri Rishikesh Dnyandeo Khilari, who sustained an injury to his face. Police have confirmed the arrest of six persons so far, identified through CCTV and drone footage, with efforts underway to nab more culprits.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has called for a 12-hour Cuttack Bandh (shutdown) on Monday, October 6, in protest against the violence and what they term “administrative failure” to maintain law and order. The organization has also demanded the immediate transfer of the DCP and the District Collector.

Security Measures: In response to the unrest and the call for a bandh, additional police forces have been deployed across sensitive areas of the city. The police conducted a flag march on Sunday to reassure citizens and warn against unlawful assembly.

Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi has assured strict action against those responsible. Meanwhile, the opposition BJD, led by former CM Shri Naveen Patnaik, condemned the violence and criticized the state government for the breakdown of law and order.
