Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today said that the students’ union election, which was on hold since 2018, will finally be held next year onwards.
Students’ union elections in universities and colleges are generally held before Durga Puja vacations. However, the previous BJD government had stopped it since 2018 in view of Covid-19 pandemic, poll related violence in campuses and other reasons.
Now, the new BJP government has prepared to resume the students’ union election from next academic year.
Speaking to media persons here, the Chief Minister said, “Students’ union elections in colleges and universities were regularly conducted in the state for many years. I am still at a loss as to why the previous government had stopped it.”
Shri Majhi said his government is “actively considering conducting students’ union elections in the next academic year and it will be held definitely”
Notably, the ABVP had filed a PIL in the Orissa High Court in September 2023 seeking direction for conducting student union elections in the state universities and colleges.
